How to cancel Planet Fitness

Steps

1. Find your membership agreement and home club. Your billing dates and any minimum term are in the agreement and the member portal.
2. Use one of the ways Planet Fitness lists: a letter to your home club, a visit to your home club in person, or the online member portal if your club offers cancelling there. Planet Fitness says policies vary by location.
3. Get it in at least 8 days before your next billing date. Planet Fitness's FAQ, as quoted by the guide below, says billing changes can take up to 7 days.
4. Keep proof of the date it arrived: the portal's confirmation email, a signed copy from the front desk, or a letter sent by certified mail with tracking. Mail it to the club address printed in your agreement.

Notice period

At least 8 days before the next monthly billing date, and separately at least 8 days before the annual fee date, per Planet Fitness's FAQ as quoted by a third-party guide. In New York, monthly-renewing contracts can be cancelled within the first 3 days of the renewal period and annually renewing ones within 15 days.

Refunds and fees

The annual fee ($49, per the same guide) is charged unless your request arrives at least 8 days before the annual fee date. Memberships with a 12-month commitment carry a $58 buyout fee if you end them early. In New York, a club must refund you within 10 business days when you cancel because it stopped offering services, you moved 25 or more miles from its clubs, or you have a qualifying disability.

If you pay through an app store, PayPal, or another company

• Planet Fitness is usually paid by a transfer from a checking account, according to the guide below, not through an app store or PayPal. Cancelling with the club is the step that ends the contract.
• Bank transfers: under federal Regulation E you can stop a preauthorized transfer by telling your bank at least 3 business days before it's scheduled. Your bank may ask for written confirmation within 14 days.

Offers you may see before you leave

• Placeholder: we have no source describing what Planet Fitness staff or the portal offer when you cancel. We'll add it once we have one we can cite.

If it doesn't work

• New York: state law says a club must let you cancel by website, email, phone, mail, or in person. If it refuses, file a complaint with the New York Attorney General.
• Other states: there is no federal click-to-cancel rule. The FTC's rule was struck down by a federal appeals court in July 2025. Some states have their own gym rules; check with your state attorney general.
• Charges after you cancelled: ask your bank to stop the payment and to block further debits from the gym, then dispute charges that came after your proof-of-cancellation date. You can also report the business at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Prefilled cancellation message

To: Your home club (letter by certified mail, or hand-delivered with a signed copy). Planet Fitness doesn't list email as a way to cancel, so send this as a letter. In New York the club must also accept it by email. Replace the [BRACKETED] fields.
